Recording Arts Opportunities

Recording arts offers a variety of job choices in today's technological worlds. A lot of people relate the recording arts to the music industry, but it isn't limited to that industry. Working in sound for film and television also involves the recording arts. The visual storytelling in film and television is enhanced by the sound technology employed.


There are several paths you can take if you decide on a career in the recording arts. To get a well-rounded picture of the different routes, you may consider attending a college to seek a degree in the recording arts. A lot of universities provide degree programs in this area.

Learning the fundamentals of music theory in a lower level class may be once course you would take when pursuing a recording arts degree. You will gain the knowledge of how music has impacted our society over the years. You might even find yourself in a class learning how to play the keyboard.

Once you reach the higher level courses, you will gain more technical knowledge. The focus may become on the science of sound. You will also study the art of reproduction and modification. These techniques are used not only in the music industry, but also in movie and television production.

With a recording arts degree, there are several career opportunities to choose from. The most common career that comes to mind is a music producer. However, with a recording arts degree you aren't limited to just the music industry. If you've ever watched the credits roll before you exit the movie theater, you may have seen other technical jobs listed that involve the recording arts.

If you are looking for a position that combines both technology and creativity, a Post Production Engineer might be one to consider. These engineers are often involved in the music industry, but there is also a need in the television and movie arena. This position uses the technology available to combine sounds.

If you've put in the time becoming an expert in your field, you could advance to a position such as a Master Engineer. This type of position is responsible for analyzing the final mix provided by a Mix Engineer, another position available in the recording arts field. The Master Engineer will analyze and look for consistency throughout the production or music album. Technologies are available that can also do this task, but they can't replace the live ear of a human being.

No matter what your aspirations are in the recording arts industry, it will require at minimum some technical training. As with most careers, you will get your start in an entry level position. With perseverance, hard work, and determination you can advance through the ranks to someday visualize your dreams
